Elst
Elst is a rapidly growing town between Arnhem and Nijmegen. Once open spaces on its periphery are giving way to housing and commercial developments.
Much of the town, including its magnificent reformed church, were destroyed during the Second World War. However, this exposed the foundations of an ancient temple from the Roman era. A metal diploma for a soldier who had completed his service and thus earned his Roman citizenship was found nearby. The Roman temple ruins formed the foundation for the predecessor of the present church.
Allied forces took Elst during Operation Market Garden. German forces destroyed the dikes flooding much of the Over-Betuwe and creating 'Het Manneneiland', an island between the Nederijn and Waal rivers. Only men were allowed in the area because it was an active battlefront.
Each year, the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen or Vierdaagse passes through Elst and other villages/towns of the Overbetuwe municipality.
