According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,870 km² (722 mi²). 1,868 km² (721 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

There are 2,755 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.53% White, 0.54% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,430 households out of which 31.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 6.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.96.
