Oscar Tschirky was maitre d'hotel of the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel in Manhatten, United States. He was widely known as "Oscar of the Waldforf" and produced a large cookbook, despite not being a chef. He is known, however, as the creator of Eggs Benedict and of the Waldorf salad and for aiding in the popularization of Thousand Island dressing.
