Opthalmoplegia
|
Opthalmoplegia (or ophthalmoplegia) is the partial or total paralysis of the eye muscles. It can be caused by a condition affecting the brain, such as a stroke or multiple sclerosis, or by a disease affecting the muscles themselves, such as Graves' disease.
Types are distinguished by the muscles involved or the direction in which eye movement is impaired. For example, when only vertical eye movement is affected, this is referred to as vertical opthalmoplegia.
