Operation Sledgehammer
|
During World War II, Operation Sledgehammer was an Allied contingency plan for a limited-objective cross-channel invasion of Europe in response to a German or Soviet collapse in 1942. It was to be used to reduce pressure on the Russians.
US forces were for it; the British were against it. Both sides conceeded that they did not have enough landing craft at the time. The plan was abondoned for Operation Torch, the invasion of Northern Africa, instead.Template:WWII-stub
