The Town of Onondaga is a located southwest of the Syracuse in Onondaga County, New York. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the town had a population of 21,063.

History
The Town of Onondaga was incorporated on April 2, 1798 from parts of other towns, with several subsequent boundary changes. The first court house for the County of Onondaga was built in 1805 on the public square in Onondaga Hill, which was then the county seat. The building was laid out by surveyor and engineer James Geddes. After the county seat was moved to Syrcacuse in 1830, the building was used as a school until 1846.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 149.8 km² (57.8 mi²). 149.5 km² (57.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,063 people, 7,679 households, and 5,513 families residing in the town. The population density is 140.9/km² (364.9/mi²). There are 7,964 housing units at an average density of 53.3/km² (138.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.29% White, 1.96% African American, 1.07% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,679 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.4% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.15.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $53,421, and the median income for a family is $63,674. Males have a median income of $42,495 versus $31,160 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,522. 4.2% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
