Nox (computer game)
|
Nox is a computer role-playing game developed by Westwood Studios that was officially released on January 31, 2000. The game was strongly inspired by the Diablo series.
Nox game is placed in a typical medieval fantasy world, full of monsters and warfare. However, the game's conceit is that the player character is not a native denizen of this world, and is, in fact, a (presumably American) modern Earth citizen living in a squalid trailer park. The character is pulled through a portal in space opened up by a mysterious and faulty television set.
Once in the land of Nox, the player finds that he is destined to become a great hero in this strange land. The three character classes that are available to the player are the Wizard, Conjuror, and Warrior. In a twist on the similar Diablo series, each class has its own divergent game layout, with each player class 'path' representing a different series of missions and levels.
Player Classes
- Warriors are masters of weaponry. They use the strongest armours and most powerful swords, axes and maces. They have high health and speed, but use no magic at all.
- Wizards are the most powerful magic users in the game. Wizards can only use a staff to attack melee-wise and for defence rely just on a robe, helmet and boots. They lack speed and health, though, due to their extreme magical abilites.
- Conjurers are the most well-rounded characters featuring average health, speed and magic. Conjurers can use leather armour, bows and some staves. A conjurer's magic focuses mainly on the 'calling' of creatures to do the player's bidding, as well as some healing and Nature type attacks.
Three modes of gameplay were available: Solo, Multiplayer, and Solo Quest.
Nox multi-player
- Nox did not enjoy the level of sales or success of Diablo, and was extremely limited in its multiplayer capability. Furthermore, multiplayer functionality was limited to Westwood's own servers, which were not as extensive as Blizzard's Diablo servers.
- Eventually, major server exploits and hacks, as well as the unbalanced nature of the character classes in combat, led to the diminishing of online play.
