Nondalton is located on the west shore of Six Mile Lake in southern Alaska.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.7 km² (8.8 mi²). 21.7 km² (8.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.57% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 221 people, 68 households, and 49 families residing in the city. The population density is 10.2/km² (26.4/mi²). There are 120 housing units at an average density of 5.5/km² (14.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 9.50% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 89.14% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.45% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 68 households out of which 47.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.8% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.25 and the average family size is 3.78.

In the city the population is spread out with 39.8% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 14.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 121.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 133.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,583, and the median income for a family is $20,694. Males have a median income of $27,500 versus $11,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $8,411. 45.4% of the population and 37.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 51.7% of those under the age of 18 and 39.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Nondalton is an Athabascan Indian (Tanaina and Iliamna) village. The name Nondalton is a Tanaina name first recorded in 1909. The village was originally located on the north shore of Six Mile Lake but it was moved in 1940 to the present location, due to wood depletion in the surrounding area and growing mud flats.

Subsistence hunting and fishing are the major economic activities.
