Nogales, Sonora

Nogales is a city in the north of the state of Sonora, Mexico. It covers an area of 1675 km², and is bordered to the north by the city of Nogales, Arizona, United States. In 2000, the census reported that Nogales had a population of 159,103 people, representing approximately 50% growth from 1990. This growth is in part due to the influx of industry that came as a result of NAFTA and the maquiladora industry. Manufacturing now accounts for 55% of the city's GDP, and services are growing as well.
Nogales officially became a municipality on July 9, 1884 when president Porfirio Diaz signed the founding documents. It was declared a city on January 1, 1920.
