Nightgaunt
|
In the Cthulhu Mythos, Nightgaunts are creatures of the Dreamlands, and serve the Lord of the Abyss, Nodens. They are black, winged, faceless beings with rubbery slick skins and a set of horns. Nightgaunts often capture unwary travelers, tickling them into submission with their barbed tails, and carry them to the lower realms of dreamland. They are sometimes used as steeds by the ghouls of the deeper Dreamlands, but do not like to fly over bodies of water.
They appear in the poem "Night-Gaunts" and the story The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, both by H.P. Lovecraft.
Nightgaunts were inspired by Lovecraft's childhood nightmares.
