Nieuw Rechts (New Right) is a far-right Dutch political party, founded by Michiel Smit, regularly accused of racism. Like other parties who were faced with this accusation, like the German Rebublikaner, the Belgian Vlaams Blok and the French Front National, Nieuw Rechts itself rejects this label.
Smit started as a local Rotterdam-based politician. He was forced out of the Leefbaar Rotterdam faction due to his position being considered too radical. His contacts with the Vlaams Blok were also a factor; this Belgian party has later been outlawed because of its racist views. Subsequently, Smit founded New Right, claiming it to be based on conservatism, liberalism and nationalism.
In the first electoral campaign, in 2004 the party failed to attract enough voters to be represented in the European parliament.
