New Albion, New York

New Albion is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,068. New Albion is a name once applied to the east coast of North America.

The Town of New Albion was incorporated in 1880 from part of the Town of Little Valley. The town is in the northwest part of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.4 km² (36.4 mi²). 94.1 km² (36.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,068 people, 808 households, and 547 families residing in the town. The population density is 22.0/km² (56.9/mi²). There are 1,005 housing units at an average density of 10.7/km² (27.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.74% White, 0.15% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 808 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 26.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 100.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,917, and the median income for a family is $38,468. Males have a median income of $30,494 versus $24,554 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,841. 10.3% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.4% of those under the age of 18 and 9.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Champlain Corners -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 5 and 7 in the southeast corner of the town.
  • Cattaraugus -- The Village of Cattaraugus is located in the northeast part of the town.
  • New Albion -- The hamlet of New Albion is southwest of Cattaraugus village by the junction of Routes 5 and 6.
  • New Albion Lake -- a small lake northwest of New Albion.

Adjacent towns and areas

The Town of Persia lies to the north. New Albion forms its border on the east with the Town of Mansfield and on the west with the Town of Leon. To the south is the Town of Napoli.
