The company Network Solutions, LLC. is a technology company founded in 1979,and is the first and largest registrar of domain names. As of 24 March 2004, Network Solutions claims (as cited in a news release listed in the "References" section) to "manage" more than 7.8 million domain names.
History
Until 1998, Network Solutions was the sole provider of domain registry through the InterNIC system. Though the "InterNIC" name is frequently associated with Network Solutions, and was even used frequently in the company's promotional material as a synonym for their domain name registry, the "InterNIC" term is a registered service mark of the U.S. Department of Commerce and is a standard developed by several companies in cooperation with the United States government.
In 2000, Network Solutions was acquired by VeriSign which sold the company again in November 26, 2003 and purchased by Pivotal Private Equity (http://www.pivotalgroup.com) for the price of $100 million.
Network Solutions provides a 100 Year Domain Service, a service to register a domain name for one year (presumably a calendar year) and then to automatically renew the domain name each sequential year for the next ninety-nine years, at a total price of 1,000 USD.
March 2, 2005 Network Solutions introduced a new form of Web site hosting packages for both Windows/Unix architectures.
The CEO is Champ Mitchell.
