According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.1 km² (4.7 mi²). 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.07% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,697 people, 1,864 households, and 1,213 families residing in the city. The population density is 390.8/km² (1,012.2/mi²). There are 2,098 housing units at an average density of 174.6/km² (452.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.94% White, 21.57% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.92% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,864 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% are married couples living together, 16.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.0 males.
