Namir Deiter

Namir Deiter is a web comic created by Isabel Marks (then Isabel Gonzalez), which debuted on November 28, 1999. It is based on the life of four girls (Tipper Namir, Snickers Namir, Blue Deiter, and Joy Satu) and their friends and how they interact with each other in both light and weighty situations. Originally, the main character was Tipper Namir, but the other characters gained popularity as the strip continued appearing.

A print collection of Namir Deiter was published by Fuzzy Kitten, an imprint of the now defunct Studio Ironcat. It's More Fun When You're Not Allowed comprises the first year of ND.

The Name

Namir is the surname of Tipper and Snickers, pronounced /n@.mIr"/. Deiter is the surname of Blue (and her biological sister/legal guardian, Roxanne). They pronounce it /daI"t@r/.

Characters

Tipper Namir (orange cat) is, officially, the lead character of the series. She's a young woman who's trying to find her place in life.

Snickers Namir (purple cat) is Tipper's sister. She and her husband, Twix, are raising Tipper as best they can.

Twix Dorpe-Namir (white cat) is Snickers' eccentric husband. They got married at a drive-thru chapel while "drunk" on non-alcoholic cider. He took his wife's last name. There are rumours he was switched at birth. Given that the rest of his family are slugs, the rumors may be true. He works as a florist.

Joy Satu (pink rabbit) is kind and caring. She spends a lot of time volunteering at a local retirement home. She's a friend of Snickers, Tipper, and Blue (her roommate). Her fur turns white in the winter. She gets along with everybody else, except for Mallory and BoB. She's spending a lot of time with Dr. Ferdinand.

BoB Dorpe (slug) - yes, it is spelled BoB - is a slug. He's painfully stupid. He used to be able to make computers explode by sheer force of incompetence, but he's taken a few classes and has gotten over that. He's Joy's ex-boyfriend, Twix's cousin, and Mallory's...fiance.

Dr. Frederick Ferdinand (beige rabbit) is Joy's dermatologist and...friend. They volunteer together at a local retirement home.

Blue Deiter (yellow cat) is Joy's roommate and friend. Has had several boyfriends, none of which have shown up more than once. She's aggressive and bullies Tipper occasionally.

Cedric Van Helgen (tan dog) is an aspiring comic artist. Intense and brooding. He used to follow Tipper around and tried to get her to model for him. Tipper and Cedric dated intermittently at one point but decided to be friends afterward. Cedric is currently dating Falco.

Taimoor (panda) is Cedric's friend. Tipper and Taimoor dated at one point. Tipper may still have a crush on him. He has a girlfriend (now fiancee) named Dahlia that only recently appeared in the strip.

Gabby Ramos (koala) is Tipper's friend and Cedric's artistic rival. Gabby has a crush on Tipper, but doesn't want to reveal it for fear she will lose Tipper's friendship.

Jennifer "Falco" Anneston (white dog) - is a very proud, competitive young woman who likes to play video games. She is Gabby's and Tipper's friend. She is currently dating Cedric.

Minor Characters

Devlin (raccoon) - Tipper's immature ex-boyfriend. Cheated on her. Got dumped.

Dahlia (brown cat) - Taimoor's somewhat bossy fiancee. Dahlia has a disease that prevents her from doing much in life, and is often babied by her wealthy father.

Momma and Murphy Dorpe (slugs) - Twix's parents. Snickers' in-laws. Want grandchildren.

Misha (panda) - Taimoor's younger sister.

Roxanne Deiter (tan cat) - Blue's legal guardian, biological sister, and waitress. She's about six years older than Blue and moved out before she did. Pregnant.

Mallory "Ducky" Duck (tan cat) - is Blue's extremely antisocial cousin. She doesn't like people, especially not Blue. She does appear to have a soft spot for BoB. Ducky is her more violent alter ego.

Other Works

Isabel Marks has worked on several other comics, both alone and with her husband, Terrence Marks. Many of these are available online or in print from ND Unlimited, their personal imprint. Those include Unlike Minerva, You Say It First, Spare Parts, Tales from Grover Hills, Imbroglio, and The Shokora Diaries. They also color Kevin & Kell, by syndicated cartoonist Bill Holbrook.

Terrence Marks does not, with very few exceptions, contribute to or write Namir Deiter. ND is drawn, written, and colored entirely by Isabel Marks.
