Nakahara Chuya was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1907. His works were influenced by the Dadaist poet Takahashi Shinkichi and by Tominaga Tarō. He also translated the poems of Rimbaud into Japanese. The influence of Rimbaud went beyond just his poetry, and Nakahara was know for his "bohemian" lifestyle.
Nakahara died at the age of 30 of cerebral meningitis. Only one of poetry collections, Yagi no Uta (Goat Songs, 1934) appeared while he was alive (in an edition of two hundred copies). He had edited his second collection, Arishi Hi no Uta (Songs of Bygone Days) just before his death.
