Mountain Park, Fulton County, Georgia
|
Mountain Park is a city located in north Fulton County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 506.
Incorporated in 1927, it is essentially a large neighborhood, and is designated a wildlife refuge. It is bordered on three sides by Roswell, and the the west by an unincorporated area of Cherokee County. (While the U.S. Census Bureau claims part of the city is in Cherokee, no local maps indicate this is actually true.) It is not related to the census area of Mountain Park in Gwinnett County, about 25 miles or 40 kilometers east.
Lake Garrett is within the city, and downstream to the northwest Lake Cherful straddles the county line (possibly causing the confusion over the exact city limit). Two swans, named Romeo and Juliet, were introduced to the lakes around 2000 to scare off Canada geese, and have since become the city's unofficial mascots. Both lakes are gradually being destroyed by siltation, caused by development upstream in Roswell. The city has notified those developers of its intent to sue to have the damage repaired.
