Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is a Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-based bus manufacturer. Incorporated in 1932 as Fort Garry Motor Body and Paint Works Limited, it grew up with the motorcoach transportation industry, and gained such a great reputation it had a large share of the North American bus industry.
MCI was purchased by Greyhound Lines in the 1960s during a round of vertical expansion and was spun off in a series of divestments in the 1980s, however, to this day MCI is the primary manufacturer of motorcoaches for Greyhound.
MCI has fallen on hard times as of late. Falling demand for new coaches in North America combined with a weak export market (both through the inexperience of MCI with exports and the relative strength of European companies like Setra) led to near collapse at the company, and the bulk of its workforce at its plant in Winnipeg and Pembina, North Dakota has been laid off. Despite this, the company is currently still in business.
