As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,101 people, 364 households, and 281 families residing in the town. The population density is 88.9/km² (230.1/mi²). There are 421 housing units at an average density of 34.0/km² (88.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 1.18% White, 97.82% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 364 households out of which 44.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 25.5% are married couples living together, 45.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.8% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.50.
