Mora, Minnesota

Mora is a city located in Kanabec County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,193. It is the county seat of Kanabec County6.

Among other things, Mora plays host to the Mora Vasaloppet, the largest ski race in Minnesota, as well as the Snake River Canoe Race, the Mora Half-Marathon, and the Mora Bicycle Tour. Mora is also the home of a gigantic Dala horse, which commerates the town's Swedish roots.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.0 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.77% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,193 people, 1,381 households, and 814 families residing in the city. The population density is 301.4/km² (781.2/mi²). There are 1,471 housing units at an average density of 138.9/km² (359.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.71% White, 0.28% African American, 1.28% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 1.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,381 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.0% are non-families. 36.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,566, and the median income for a family is $40,577. Males have a median income of $32,222 versus $21,797 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,949. 9.0% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.7% of those under the age of 18 and 10.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
