Minor Wheel of Time characters

Template:Wikify This article is about minor characters in Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time fantasy fiction series, who do not have their own article.

Contents

Logain Ablar

A man who can channel strongly but not on the level of Rand al'Thor, he declared himself as the Dragon Reborn shortly before the book series started. Midway through the first book he is captured and his ability to channel is removed. After this we see him briefly in the next two books, always depressed, with someone keeping him from killing himself.

His luck changes during the revolt in the White Tower. He escapes with Min and Siuan Sanche, thanks to a promise of revenge on the Red Ajah. Siuan begins to spread rumors that he was set up by the Red Ajah, which, while false, Logain supports with happiness. He regained his ability to channel thanks to a new discovery of Nyneave's. Egwene sets him free and he joins Rand's group of channelers, the Asha'man.

We do not see him for a few more books, but when he reappers he has bonded two of the captured Aes Sedai, one as his lover. He leads the Asha'man still loyal to Rand, putting him at odds with Mazrim Taim, his equal in power. When the Dragon Reborn goes missing he gathers up a small army to find Rand. Despite his slight arrogance he supports Rands thoroughly.

Shaidar Haran

A Myrdraal with the normal powers: can see with no eyes, strikes fear by looking at him and can disappear in the shadows. However, he is a head taller than most Myrdraal, can shield channelers from the True Source, and has a sense of humour. He is the voice of the Dark One, he speaks for the Dark One. His name literally means "Hand of the Dark" in the Old Tongue. He is usually the bringer of bad news; he summons the other Forsaken to Shayol Ghul. He cannot be away from that place for long, and wishes to sever his ties from there. It might be the first occurrence of Dark One's appearance.

Slayer

Slayer is the merger of two souls, Lord Isam Mandragoran and Lord Luc Mantear. Little is known about this dark creature, nor his origins. Isam was of royal blood in the Kingdom of Malkier. In fact, he was Lan's cousin. When the Malkier was overrun by Trollocs, Isam was one of the few Malkieri to escape. His mother took him south but they were attacked by Trollocs.

Luc was brother to Tigraine, and a prince of Andor. Luc is also Rand's blood uncle - brother of Tigraine. Gitara Moroso, the Aes Sedai who possessed the Fortelling, urged him to seek his glory in the Blight. It is speculated by many fans that this is where Luc and Isam merged, becoming a sort of Super Darkfriend. The Slayer killed Janduin, Rand's biological father, when he came into the Blight.

Somehow, both of them survived in the Blight. They met in the Mountain of Dhoom and merged into a something new. The slayer has many abilities. He can appear in both forms in the world of flesh, but he is also master of the World of Dreams and can change easily as well. Slayer is his wolf name. He can also enter the Tower of Ghenji. It's quite possible that he has something to do with creating Darkhounds and can be connected with the big unsolved murder of Asmodean and it is remotely possible that Slayer killed the two Aes Sedai Adeleas and Ispan in Book 8. It also seems clear that both Luc and Isam's personalities have survived intact, and that Luc is just as evil as Isam. In fact, they seem to be quite the bosom buddies.

His attempt to kill Padan Fain in the Two Rivers was unsuccessful, and he feared Perrin. He still hunts Ordeith, but recently tried to kill Rand and Min. It was he who mysteriously killed the Grey Man who tried to kill Egwene in the White Tower. He also killed the Black Ajah sisters Amico Nagoyin and Joya Byir, who were being held in the Stone of Tear.

However, this new information still doesn't cast a lot of light on how this merge of two people came to be, and in fact muddies the issue even more. If Slayer is not a case of possession, then what is he? How much of Luc's future did Gitara Moroso see when she sent Luc to his doom?

Morgase Trakand

Morgase Trakand, by the Grace of the Light, Queen of Andor, Defender of the Realm, Protector of the People, High Seat of House Trakand, is the ruler of Andor, and was the wife of Taringail Damodred, now deceased. She has two children, Elayne and Gawyn, and is stepmother to Galad Damodred.

Morgase first entered the White Tower at age 14, as is traditional for Andor's Daughter-Heirs, but only for form's sake; she could not channel. She returned to Andor before she was 16 to lay claim to the Lion Throne. She married Taringail Damodred in order to solidify her claim to the throne; after his death, her lovers included Thom Merrilin and Gareth Bryne.

Morgase was taken through Compulsion by "Lord Gaebril" (Rahvin), who became her consort. Under his influence, she exiled many of her most loyal supporters, but upon hearing of some sort of revolt in Two Rivers, she regained enough control to flee with her nurse, Lini, man-at-arms Tallanvor, and several other supporters. She fled to Amadicia to seek assistance from the Whitecloaks, but was secreted out when the Seanchan attacked; she then fell into the company of Lord Perrin Goldeneyes (ironically the man who "led" the "revolt" in the Two Rivers) and, under the pseudonym Maighdin, was accepted as a servant to his wife Faile. She is currently a captive of the Shaido.

Birgitte Silverbow

Typically described as having a long blonde braid of hair down her back, wearing a man's coat and trousers, and being deadly with a bow and arrow, Birgitte Silverbow is the heroine of many hundreds of gleemen's tales and legends. Like many of the great heroes of the Wheel of Time, she has been "spun out" into the Pattern many times, taking a different name but always following the same pattern: an archer, sometimes a soldier, who is linked to a lump-faced man who fights with two swords (most famously known as Gaidal Cain), whom she at first hates but eventually falls for. She is also one of the Heroes of the Horn of Valere, and, like Artur Hawkwing, like Gaidal Cain, like a hundred other heroes, can be summoned to fight for he who blows the Horn.

When not being woven into the Pattern, or fighting in spectral form, she and all the other heroes of the Wheel reside in Tel'aran'rhiod, and it was there that she first made her acquaintance with Elayne Trakand and Nynaeve al'Meara. The two were hunting Darkfriends in the World of Dreams, and despite injunctions to the contrary (and the ridicule of Gaidal), she insisted on stepping in. This led, eventually, to a confrontation with Moghedien in which Birgitte was ripped bodily from Tel'aran'rhiod and expelled directly into the waking world, instead of being born (re-incarnated) into it normally. When Nynaeve and Elayne found her, she was dying, a condition not even Nynaeve could heal. Elayne, with no other recourse, bonded Birgitte as her Warder, which saved her life, and Birgitte has served in this capacity ever since. Deadly and unspeakably competent with a bow, she is also by far the most raucous of Elayne's entourage; she and Mat Cauthon share a fondness for drink, carousing and foul language, a friendship strengthened by 1) Mat's memories, and 2) the fact that he is, in fact, the Hornsounder.

Birgitte is an oddity in several respects. She is one of the world's only female Warders--both she and Elayne have discovered at first hand that the bond of their shared gender increases the empathic link of the Warder bond to sometimes unacceptable levels (when Birgitte gets drunk, Elayne gets tipsy, and likewise when Elayne and Rand spend some time alone, Birgitte gets... Disturbed, to put it mildly). She is also the first Hero of the Horn to have been expelled from Tel'aran'rhiod: she still has the memories of all her past lives, though as time passes they are beginning to blur together. Finally, she is intimately linked with Gaidal Cain, though readers have not yet learned how; one of Min Farshaw's viewings indicate that Birgitte is linked romantically to a man who is simultaneously ten years older and ten years younger than herself, and shortly before her expulsion from the World of Dreams, she indicated that Gaidal had left to be reborn (naturally) into the Pattern. Gaidal's current whereabouts remain unknown, though many fans favor Mat's orphan ward, the famously ugly but curiously charming Olver.

Faile Bashere

Zarine "Faile" ni Bashere t'Aybara is the daughter of Lord Davram Bashere, the Marshal-General to Saldaea and uncle to Queen Tenobia. When Perrin Aybara first met her, she was a self-professed Hunter for the Horn of Valere, calling herself Mandarb (blade in the Old Tongue). When this failed to impress the Two Rivers blacksmith, she announced that she would call herself Faile, Old Tongue for "falcon" (pronounced "fa-YEEL") instead; this, on the other hand, caused Perrin no small amount of anxiety, as his friend Min Farshaw had prophecied that he would soon find a hawk and a falcon landing on his shoulder. Faile did indeed take a liking to Perrin, and, to the chagrin of many fans, has stooped over him ever since.

Faile is fiercely independent, as suggested by her chosen name; the name "Zarine" was given her by her mother, who wanted a daughter who would recline on a cushion and eat grapes. (Ironically, Deira t'Bashere is one of the most fearsome women in the series.) She left Saldaea in a fit of pique, seeking to prove her independence; she ended up in Illian, where the Great Hunt for the Horn was being launched, and took her vows as a hunter. She joined the party on the trip from Falme to Tear; she felt that an Aes Sedai, her Warder, and a golden-eyed blacksmith were her ticket to finding the Horn (she was much disappointed--and plenty surprised--to find that it had not only already been found, but blown). During that time, she and Perrin developed a romantic attachment, and she was a constant font of helpful advice during the Two Rivers campaign. After his success there, he married her. After fortifying the Two Rivers area against further attacks, she and Perrin raised an army and marched to Cairhein to support Rand al'Thor; unfortunately, this took Perrin into constant contact with Berelain sur Paendrag, the ruler of the city-state of Mayene and descendent of Artur Hawkwing. She had long expressed an interest in Perrin, an interest that would not be dissuaded by something as old-fashioned as a marriage, and these two birds of prey were none too happy to see each other. While in Cairhein Faile also cultivated a new source of information and espionage--she became the patroness of a clutch of Cairheinen youths, who, having seen their nation defeated twice by the Aiel, decided to emulate the ways of the Threefold Land. These Cairheinens became the warrior society Cha Faile, the Falcon's Talons, and are personally loyal to Faile.

Perrin, Faile and Berelain were eventually sent into Amadicia (with retainers and a small army) to stop a mad old man from spreading false prophecy about the Dragon. While there, the encampment was attacked by Shaido Aiel, and Faile was captured. Perrin, we are assured, will stop at nothing to get her back, a resolve that distresses most fans; Faile is probably the least liked of all the series' characters, followed closely by the often-disagreeable Nynaeve al'Meara.

Verin Mathwin

Verin Mathwin is an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah. She has some graying in her hair - a sign of not inconsiderable age for an Aes Sedai. Like all Brown Ajah, she devotes herself to knowledge and the pursuit of it; as a result, she has a tendency to ramble when talking about a particular subject or become lost in thought.

Verin's scatterbrain tendencies hide a calculating mind that is more aware of events in the world than she lets on. Speculation of whether she is Black Ajah is rife in fandom.
