Minerva is a town located in Essex County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 796.

The Town of Minerva is located in the southwest corner of the county.

History

The town was formed from part of the Town of Schroon in 1817.

Geography

The Hudson River forms part of the western boundary of the town. The west town line is the border of Hamilton County, New York and the south town line is the border of Warren County, New York and Hamilton County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 419.9 km² (162.1 mi²). 410.9 km² (158.6 mi²) of it is land and 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.15% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 796 people, 321 households, and 225 families residing in the town. The population density is 1.9/km² (5.0/mi²). There are 648 housing units at an average density of 1.6/km² (4.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.86% White, 0.25% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.51% from two or more races. 0.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 321 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 110.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,903, and the median income for a family is $37,500. Males have a median income of $28,523 versus $19,688 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,531. 13.6% of the population and 11.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
