Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 26,527 people, 10,467 households, and 6,855 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,469.5/km² (3,804.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 16.19% White, 79.06% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 1.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,467 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.4% are married couples living together, 24.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.02.
