Microvillus
|
A microvillus (usually not occurring alone, so usually referred to as the plural microvilli) is a small (5 µm) hairlike structure on the surface of absorptive and secretory epithelial cells to increase their surface area approximately 600-fold (human). Microvilli are composed of actin filaments.
microvilli are an extension of the plasma membrane containing microfilaments. its function is to increase the surface area of the plasma membrane for absorption and secretion. Microvilli are also modified to form sensory receptors. (Anatomy and Physiology 6th edition chapter3, pp60 ,Seely, Rod. R, McGraw Hill, 2000)
