Bio

Vaughn was originally no more than Sydney's handler while she was working as a double agent for the CIA within SD-6. However, as time progressed and Sydney helped to bring about the downfall of the organization, Vaughn and Sydney became very close and then intimate. However, after Sydney's two-year disappearance, Vaughn became involved with NSC liaison Lauren Reed. When it was discovered that Sydney was still alive, Vaughn, now married to Lauren, had to struggle with reignited feelings for Sydney while simultaneously caring about Lauren as well. When Lauren was revealed to be a double-agent for The Covenant, Vaughn became obsessed with her capture and was encouraged by Jack Bristow to kill her, which he does at the end of the third season, an act that continues to haunt him into the fourth season, even though he shot Lauren in order to stop her from killing Sydney. (Although the kill was initially left ambiguous, it was later confirmed in a fourth season episode that established that Vaughn had Lauren's body taken back to the US and placed in a secret crypt.)

Following Lauren's demise (and between the third and fourth seasons), Vaughn appeared to go into an emotional tailspin, ultimately setting fire to his own house. Soon after spending a month apparently undergoing a psych evaluation, he resigned from the CIA. In reality, however, Vaughn had been seconded into a black ops division of the CIA called Authorized Personnel Only (APO), along with Sydney, Jack Bristow, and others.

Vaughn speaks English, Spanish, Italian and French fluently (the latter because actor Michael Vartan was born in France).

Vaughn's father was a CIA agent who was one of several killed in the line of duty by Irina Derevko, Sydney's mother. The fact that Bill Vaughn is dead is now being questioned in season four of Alias after Vaughn finds his Dad's old journal dated until 1982 when Bill presumably died three years earlier. His subsequent investigation would lead to him conducting a secret mission in collaboration with Sydney, and ultimately (at the end of the episode "Nightingale") turning rogue. He returns to APO after discovering his father was really dead and that it had been a ruse by Elena Derevko all along. At the end of Season 4 Vaughn proposes to Sydney and the two take their vacation Santa Barbara where during a car ride he reveals that his real name is not Michael Vaughn, however, a car crash cut his explanation short.
