Medina County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 39,304. Its county seat is Hondo6. The county is named for the Medina River.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,456 km² (1,335 mi²). 3,439 km² (1,328 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 39,304 people, 12,880 households, and 10,136 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (30/mi²). There are 14,826 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.38% White, 2.20% Black or African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 14.48% from other races, and 2.88% from two or more races. 45.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,880 households out of which 39.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.20% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.30% are non-families. 18.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.91 and the average family size is 3.30.
In the county, the population is spread out with 29.00% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 105.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $36,063, and the median income for a family is $40,288. Males have a median income of $27,045 versus $21,734 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,210. 15.40% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line.
