The May company was founded in 1877 by David May in Leadville, Colorado. Its headquarters moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1905, and the company went public in 1911. David's son Morton May became the chairman in 1951 and headed the company for 16 years. Morton May was extremely active in St. Louis civic affairs and an important patron of the arts.
Mary Livingstone was working as a lingerie salesgirl at Hamburger's Department Store on Broadway, later a May store, in downtown Los Angeles when she met her future husband Jack Benny, who played the Orpheum theatre across the street. Later, the department store was used as a setting in his radio and television shows.
On February 28, 2005, Federated Department Stores, Inc. announced that they will acquire the May company for $11 billion in stock in a deal that would create the nation's second largest department store chain with over 1,000 stores and $30 billion in annual sales. Eventually, Federated will phase out most of May's regional nameplates to the Macy's or Bloomingdale's name by 2006-2007. Federated will study what to do with the Lord & Taylor and Marshall Field's nameplates.
