Manchester is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 54,740.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 71.7 km² (27.7 mi²). 70.6 km² (27.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.52% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 54,740 people, 23,197 households, and 14,010 families residing in the town. The population density is 775.3/km² (2,008.2/mi²). There are 24,256 housing units at an average density of 343.6/km² (889.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 82.77% White, 8.42% African American, 0.20% Native American, 3.15% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.12% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. 6.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 23,197 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $49,426, and the median income for a family is $58,769. Males have a median income of $41,893 versus $32,562 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,989. 8.0% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.1% of those under the age of 18 and 7.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Places of interest

Manchester is home to one hospital, the Manchester Memorial Hospital. MMH is a member of the Eastern Connecticut Health Network, the main office of which is also in Manchester.

Manchester is also famous for the Manchester Community College, a 2-year community college that offers general-education classes during the summer.

Manchester is also known for The Shoppes at Buckland Hills (http://www.theshoppesatbucklandhills.com/html/index.asp), an enclosed shopping mall, and the nearby strip mall, Buckland Plaza.

Manchester, CT is also the home several Technology companies including Smith Aerospace.

As a center of the silk industry in America from the late 19th through the mid-20th Century, the "Cheney Family" historic district [1] (http://www.manchesterhistory.org/cheneybros.htm) showcases mills refurbished as apartments and includes nearby museums.
