Madurodam is a miniature city between Scheveningen and The Hague, Netherlands, that is a model of a Dutch town on a 1:25 scale, composed by (typical Dutch) buildings and landmarks that are found in various places of the country. This major Dutch tourist attraction was built in 1952 and has been visited by tens of millions of visitors since then. The minituare city was named after George Maduro, a student from Curaçao died at Dachau concentration camp in 1945, and whose parents donated the money to start the Madurodam project.
On 2 July 1952, then-princess Beatrix was appointed as mayor of Madurodam, after which she was shown around in her town. When she was appointed queen of the Netherlands, she laid down this function. Nowadays, the mayor of Madurodam is elected from the youth municipal council, which consists of 25 pupils of schools in the region.
