Overview
It is very easy to use (user-friendly) and includes the latest versions of KDE, OpenOffice.org and more. The first version of MEPIS was released on May 10, 2003. Among Debian-based LiveCDs its installation to hard disk and APT-get compatibility (fidelity to clean Debian base) are considered excellent.
A copy of SimplyMEPIS was included in the 2004 book Point and Click Linux. MEPIS is an acronym for Managerial, Educational and Personal Information Systems.
History
MEPIS's first official release was May 10, 2003. It was created by Warren Woodford of Morgantown, West Virginia. MEPIS was first created for the purpose of creating Warren's vision of a Linux distribution that did everything he wanted. Warren felt that SuSE, Red Hat Linux, and Mandriva Linux (formerly Mandrake) weren't enough, and were too difficult for the average user to use.
On November 21, 2002, Warren decided that if he wanted things done right he would have to do them himself. According to Warren Woodford himself, the name MEPIS is pronounced like "Memphis" (the city in Tennessee, United States) with the extra letters removed and of course not pronounced.
MEPIS is a project based on Debian which is a distribution (often called 'distro') of Linux and uses the KDE Desktop, which stands for "K Desktop Environment".
Recently MEPIS has become more popular due to the fact that it is based on Debian, a well known and loved distribution, it is easy to run as a LiveCD and just as simple to install to the hard drive. Great for a general, all O/S trouble shooting CD-ROM boot disk as well (anti-virus scanner/cleaner built in, ClamAV).
The current version of MEPIS is SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1-1. MEPIS has gained attention from well known sources including TechTV, Slashdot, and is ranked in the top 5 most popular distributions according to Distrowatch.com.
