Lyon County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 25,425. Its county seat is Marshall6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,869 km² (721 mi²). 1,850 km² (714 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.01% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 25,425 people, 9,715 households, and 6,334 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 10,298 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.58% White, 1.49% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 1.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.89% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 3.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,715 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.80% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 13.30% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 19.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,996, and the median income for a family is $48,512. Males have a median income of $32,102 versus $21,445 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,013. 10.10% of the population and 6.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.00% of those under the age of 18 and 12.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
