Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera (July 13,1941-) Born in Montevideo, Uruguay. Ruled the country between 1990-1995.
Trained as a lawyer in the La Republica University (Universidad de la republica), and since 1961, has worked as a journalist.
Married to Maria Julia Poa Brito del Pino (1946-). They have three children, Pilar, Luis Alberto, and Juan Jose.
In 1971, he was elected as a Deputy for his Party, the National Party, (Blanco), he affiliated to this party at the age of 17. He occupied his position until the 1973 Coup. When Democracy was restored in 1984 he was elected as a Senator, and Senate's Vice-President. In 1989 was elected as the President of Uruguay, and took the office in 1990 for a five year-term.
During his rule, he encouraged the Free Market program, been a co-founder of the Mercosur, together with the presidents of Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina, which took effect in the Treaty of Asuncion on 1991.
In 1992, his economic policies were rejected by the people, and in a referendum, the people rejected the Privatization programs.
In 1999, he defeated in the Party's primary elections to Juan Andres Ramirez, and was a candidate for presidency again, but some Blanco leaders, blamed him of been corrupt during his term, been in the third place in the general elections, with 21.3% of the votes.
In 2004, in the Party's primary elections was defeated by Jorge Larranaga, who was the Party's solo candidate. Actually,Lacalle is the leader of the Nationalist sector denominated Herrerismo.
