Ljungby is a Municipality in Kronoberg County, in southern Sweden where the town Ljungby is seat.

Geography

Ljungby is located in what Swedes call "darkest Smalandia", referring to the densely forested area and without any connection to the sea. Ljungby contains a little more of plains than average Smalandia though.

Lakes, forests and plains are never far away, they are everywhere in Ljungby, according to the residents themselves.

History

Ljungby traces its not so interesting history back to the Viking Age. Vikings follow the river Lagan and lived in its vincinity, and one of the locations were in the Ljungby municipality.

In the 14th century several important medieval roads went through the municipality. In that century, an inn was established , and this was to form the center of Ljungby city.

In the 19th century the area closest to the city itself consisted mostly of sand without any plants, and the government issued funds to plant trees which would tie together the sand and make it suitable for plants.

Ljungby received its rights as a merchant city in 1828, and in 1936 it got its charter.

Notability

Cliff Burton was a basist of the band Metallica who died on a country road within the municipality when the band's car volted on September 27, 1986.
