List of postal codes in South Africa
|
Post Codes were introduced in South Africa in the mid 1970s, with the introduction of automated sorting.
South African post codes consist of four digits. In the case of cities and large towns, the last two digits may indicate the mode of delivery:
City | Province | Street Address | PO Box Address
Johannesburg | Gauteng | 2001 | 2000
Cape Town | Western Cape | 8001 | 8000
Pretoria | Gauteng | 0002 | 0001
Durban | KwaZulu Natal | 4001 | 4000
Kimberley | Northern Cape | 8301 | 8300
Port Elizabeth | Eastern Cape | 6000 | 6001
Nelspruit | Mpumalanga | 1201 | 1200
Bloemfontein | Free State | 9301 | 9300
Polokwane | Limpopo | 0699 | 0700 |
A feature of South African postal addresses, also common to Australia, is that it is only necessary to include the suburb, not the city, for example, in the case of Yeoville in Johannesburg:
47 Rockey Street YEOVILLE 2198
The South African system was also used in Namibia until 1992, with code '9000' used for the entire country, eg:
Private Bag X1 WINDHOEK 9000
PO Box 152 SWAKOPMUND 9000
South Africa's neighbours, Lesotho and Swaziland, have their own separate post code systems.
