|
The National Park Act of the Republic of China was passed in 1972 to protect the nature, wildlife, and history. There are six national parks in ROC:
- Kenting National Park, the oldest; the southern most, with tropical coral reef and migratory birds.
- Yushan National Park, the largest; on central Taiwan, Jade Mountain is the highest peak of East Asia.
- Yangmingshan National Park, the smallest on Taiwan; has a volcanic landform; the northernmost
- Taroko National Park: marble gorge, east Taiwan
- Shei-Pa National Park: has diminishing fish brook masu salmon (Oncorhychus masou formosanum); on central north in Hsinchu County & Miaoli County.
- Kinmen National Park: historical battle-fields; only one not on Taiwan
The total area of these six national parks is more than 2,394,070 km² (about 227,336 acres), approximately 8.43 percent of Taiwan's total area.
