Liparidae
|
The Liparidae are a family of scorpaeniform fish, the Snailfish.
The name Liparidae has also been applied in the past to the tussock moth family of Lepidoptera, which includes the injurious gypsy moth. Certain encyclopedia web-sites [1] (http://www.britannica.com/eb/article?eu=75836&query=nest&ct=eb) [2] (http://www.bartleby.com/65/gy/gypsymot.html) indicate Liparidae is still the correct name, but this appears to be an error. In 1984 the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 41: 227-230 - Opinion 1283) gave Lymantriidae Hampson, [1893] nomenclatural precedence over Orgyiidae Wallengren, 1861 and Dasychiridae Packard, 1864 (Insecta, Lepidoptera), placing Liparidae Boisduval, 1834 on the Official Index of rejected names.
