Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,136 km² (439 mi²). 1,133 km² (437 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,108 people, 8,664 households, and 6,532 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (50/mi²). There are 9,846 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.04% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
