Limestone County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name comes from Limestone Creek, a local stream. As of 2000 the population was 65,676. Its county seat is Athens.

History
Limestone County was established on February 6, 1818.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,572 km² (607 mi²). 1,471 km² (568 mi²) of it is land and 101 km² (39 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.43% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 65,676 people, 24,688 households, and 18,219 families residing in the county. The population density is 45/km² (116/mi²). There are 26,897 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (47/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.79% White, 13.33% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.14% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 2.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 24,688 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.00% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 103.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $37,405, and the median income for a family is $45,146. Males have a median income of $35,743 versus $23,389 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,782. 12.30% of the population and 9.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.20% of those under the age of 18 and 14.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
