Lawtey is a city located in Bradford County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 656.
The city has received national attention and earned the ominous distinction of being one of only two official speed traps designated by the American Automobile Association (the other being Waldo a few miles to the south)[1] (http://www.aaasouth.com/previous_issues/jul_aug_01/travadfl.asp), due to the city's strict enforcement of the local speed limit on US 301 as it cuts through town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²). 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 656 people, 259 households, and 182 families residing in the city. The population density is 183.5/km² (476.8/mi²). There are 295 housing units at an average density of 82.5/km² (214.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 64.79% White, 32.16% African American, 1.22% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 1.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 259 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 16.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older.
