According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.0 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.71% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,157 people, 4,982 households, and 2,909 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,025.7/km² (2,657.1/mi²). There are 5,177 housing units at an average density of 475.9/km² (1,232.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 86.16% White, 8.75% African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.43% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.22% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. 2.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,982 households out of which 24.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.1% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% are non-families. 33.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.80.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 34.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.8 males.
