Salvelinus namaycush (Walbaum, 1792) |
Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) is a freshwater char living mainly in lakes in northern North America. Other names for it include Lake char, Touladi and Grey trout.
It is a fairly large fish, probably the largest trout, the record weighing almost 33 kilograms. It was fished commercially in the Great Lakes until lampreys and pollution decimated the population. Small commercial fisheries still exist in lakes in northern Canada.
