Kid Dracula

Kid Dracula Game Boy Logo
Kid Dracula is a pair of video game titles by Konami released during the early 90s. There were only two releases in the series: one for the Famicom and one for the Game Boy. Only the Game Boy version made it to the United States.

In Japan, the full titles of the games are Akumajō Dracula Special: Boku Dracula-kun, which means Demon Castle Dracula Special: I'm Kid Dracula. The Game Boy version was released in the United States as simply Kid Dracula.

Kid Dracula is half human, half vampire, as his mother was a mortal. Although he loved his father, he soon learned that spreading his father's evil was wrong. Even as a youngster, he fought for good against evil monsters who threatened humans. Even then he knew how to use a Ball of Destruction. Since Kid Dracula is a vampire, he has the ability to turn into a bat and fly.

Games list

The following list was taken partially from Castlevania Dungeon (http://www.classicgaming.com/castlevania/).

Game Title Console/Platform Year Notes
Akumajō Dracula Special: Boku Dracula-kun Nintendo Famicom 1991 Japan only
Akumajō Dracula Special: Boku Dracula-kun Game Boy 1993 Japan release title
Kid Dracula Game Boy 1993 United States release title

Storyline

The story of Kid Dracula is relatively simple. The self-proclaimed Demon King, Kid Dracula, has awoken from a long sleep, only to discover that the dinosaur Galamoth has challenged him (note that Galamoth makes an appearance in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night). Swiping his father's cape, it is then up to Kid Dracula himself to set out on the adventure to destroy the monster.

Connections

It should be noted that the Japanese name of the Kid Dracula series is Akumajō Dracula, which is also the name used in most of the Castlevania games in Japan (a tradition that has been recently abandoned), and thus suggests that there is a relation between the two. It is quite possible that Kid Dracula is just a parody of the Castlevania series and has no relation with its storyline.

However, speculation has suggested that Kid Dracula is the son of Dracula, Alucard, from the Castlevania series. This would have to be either Alucard in a super deformed, comic form, or Alucard early in his childhood, before the events of Castlevania Legends (Alucard's earliest chronologial appearance), which then suggests that Kid Dracula takes place between the years 1094 and 1450. If one reads the history of Alucard, one notices that at one point, Alucard had emulated his father for the first part of his life, fitting in the possibility that Kid Dracula is indeed Alucard.

It should be noted that the series takes on a more comedic tone which is very much unlike the very serious tone that the Castlevania series takes.
