Kendrick School

Named after John Kendrick (1573-1624) and with the current buildings dating back to 1877, Kendrick School is a fully selective, foundation girls' Grammar School situated in the centre of Reading, Berkshire in England.

Pupils are selected on the basis of academic ability via an admissions test at age 11 (though entry is possible in other years too). As a state-funded school, there are no fees so it is severely over-subscribed with over seven applicants per place.

Since national league tables were introduced, Kendrick has consistently been among the top schools in the country. For the last two years, the school has ranked first nationally for GCSEs, breaking state school records with over 90% of the grades being A* and A. In 2003, Kendrick won the prestigious title of 'Sunday Times School of the Year', acknowledging its consistent high achievement in all areas.

Kendrick is a Beacon School and from September 2003 has been designated as a Specialist School for Science and Maths. OFSTED Inspection findings state:

"This is a school of outstandingly high quality. Leadership is highly effective in helping pupils to aspire to excellence as scholars and as individuals. Pupils attain the highest standards. The quality of teaching is very good. The school provides very good value for money"

Aims of the School

  • To create the conditions which enable all students to have the opportunities to maximise their abilities and achieve excellence
  • To introduce students to the challenges and pleasures of academic study, intellectual curiosity and the ability to think
  • To offer a curriculum which is wider than the National Curriculum and contains balance, coherence and continuity
  • To create an ethos of self-discipline and self-motivation
  • To encourage all students to make a worthwhile contribution to the school and to the wider society and the environment
  • To help to develop happy, well-balanced individuals, both mentally and physically, who are confident, adaptable and resilient and able to see their worth as people
  • To develop the foundations which will enable students to become independent learners and who will wish to continue their education either at further education establishments or in the working environment
  • To benefit from the strengths of a selective single-sex school while developing the skills and qualities which enable students to take up their chosen rôles and equip them for the challenges of the future
  • To value and foster spiritual development and moral values which include honesty and integrity.
