Kayne Taylor is a pop music singer from Melbourne, Victoria who won the 2004 Australian series of Popstars Live. Taylor started singing ten years ago and can also play bass and guitar but had failed to win success.
Taylor was working for Australia Post when a friend dared him to audition. He did so becoming a finalist and then the winner. On the Popstars Live: the Finalists, Taylor covered Jealous Guy first performed by John Lennon and later an Australian number one hit for Roxy Music in 1981.
After winning the series, Taylor entered the studios in early June 2004 to record a debut album. The first single Heartbreaker was released on 21 June 2004 and debuted at #8 on the Australian singles charts. He co-wrote this song himself.
Critics have attacked him as superficial and, on the whole, unworthy of a record deal. This is not so much an attack on Taylor himself, as the concept of the 'karaoke show', like Popstars Live and others such as Popstars, Australian Idol and The X Factor. This criticism is evident in record sales, both of the individual and the format. The Seven Network's Popstars Live franchise was never very successful, and the latest series reflected this both in ratings and sales. None of its finalists or winners have achieved real success. This is not entirely unjust, as many critics have pointed out, as these are often people with questionable musical credentials. Taylor is certainly no exception. The trend from this format at least as legitimate musical product is evidenced by the commercial non-success of Network Ten's counterpart, Australian Idol, and its winner Casey Donovan, and even the lack of lasting success and impact on the musical scene of the first series' contestants who gained recording contracts.
Due to his complete lack of success both as a musician and personality, especially with such poor record sales, and a complete lack of activity, musical or otherwise, it is widely believed Taylor has been dropped from his record company, and is likely to be relegated to the growing heap of those who could not last in the industry, and perhaps did not deserve to be there in the first place.
