KGMB is the licensed broadcast affiliate of Columbia Broadcasting System in Hawaii. Based in Honolulu and broadcasting on channel 9, the station is currently owned by Emmis Communications and has satellite feeds on all the major Hawaiian Islands to rebroadcast programs outside of metropolitan Honolulu.
KGMB was the first television station in Hawaii, airing its first programs on December 1, 1952. It aired shows from all the major networks in the United States. Its first owners were Hawaii Broadcasting System, Honolulu Star-Bulletin and future congressman Cecil Heftel. By the time Lee Enterprises of Davenport, Iowa purchased KGMB in 1977, it was airing exclusively CBS programming. In 2000, media consolidation allowed Emmis Communications which had already owned rival KHON to purchase KGMB. Today, KGMB9 brands itself as Hawaii's Severe Weather Station.
