Jones County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 10,381. Its county seat is Trenton6.

History

The county was formed in 1779 from the southwestern part of Craven County. It was named for Willie Jones, a Revolutionary leader and president of the North Carolina Council of Safety; he was later the state's chief opponent of ratification of the United States Constitution.

Law and government

Jones County is a member of the regional Eastern Carolina Council of Governments.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,226 km² (473 mi²). 1,222 km² (472 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.30% water.

Townships

The county is divided into seven townships, which are both numbered and named: 1 (White Oak), 2 (Pollocksville), 3 (Trenton), 4 (Cypress Creek), 5 (Tuckahoe), 6 (Chinquapin), and 7 (Beaver Creek).

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,381 people, 4,061 households, and 2,936 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (22/mi²). There are 4,679 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 60.97% White, 35.87% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.70% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 2.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,061 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.20% are married couples living together, 15.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,882, and the median income for a family is $35,180. Males have a median income of $28,662 versus $19,536 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,916. 16.90% of the population and 14.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.30% of those under the age of 18 and 16.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
