John Alexander Dowie

Dr. John Alexander Dowie (1848–1907) was a significant Scottish clergyman in the U.S..
Dowie was born in Edingburgh and moved to Australia as a boy but returned to Edinburgh to study theology. He was an evangelist and faith healer. 1890 he moved to United States and founded, in 1896, the The Christian Catholic Apostolic Church in Zion, Illinois, with himself as First Apostle. In he started to build 1901 Zion City in Illinois, USA. In June 1901, Dowie took the fateful step of publicly announcing that he was indeed Elijah the Restorer. He hated Islam with passion and promided the end of Islamic faith. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad heard of this and challenged Alexander Dowie to what is called in Islam a Mubahala (prayer duell). Both should pray to God, that he should show the truth, destroying the false one, whoever that might be, in the lifetime of the other. Hazrat Ahmad's challenge was reported openly in American newspapers. Dowie answered Ahmad very arrogantly, claiming that he would crush that Muslim Mesiah with his foot. Later Dowie deteriorated dramatically, his family and friends deserted him and he died miserable in 1907. When Dowie died, the Sunday Herald of Boston featured the following headline: Great is Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiah! Foretold pathetic end of Dowie....(http://www.IslaminZion.com)
