Joan Manuel Serrat Teresa (born December 27, 1943 in Barcelona) is a Catalan singer and songwriter.
He came into conflict with the regime of Francisco Franco, because Serrat wished to sing in his native Catalan language, banned by Franco.
Originally Spain had entered Serrat in the Eurovision Song Contest 1968 to sing "La, la, la", but he wanted to sing it in Catalan, to which Franco would not agree. So he had to be swiftly replaced by Massiel, who would sing in Spanish.
In 1975 Serrat moved to exile in Mexico, where he lived one year until returning to Spain after Franco's death.
In October 2004 he revealed that he had been undergoing treatment for cancer of the bladder and in November that year he cancelled a tour of Latin America and the USA in order to undergo surgery in Barcelona.
