Geography
The parish has a total area of 1,706 km2 (659 mi2). 1,689 km2 (652 mi2) of it is land and 16 km2 (6 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.95% water.

The racial makeup of the parish is 80.60% White, 17.79% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,480 households out of which 37.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 13.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
