Jean Ziegler (born April 19, 1934) is the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food and is a senior professor of sociology at the University of Geneva and the Sorbonne, Paris. He is noted for his leftist politics and is the author of controversial books on Swiss history, politics, and economics.
In July 2004, an organization called UNWatch called for Ziegler's removal from his UN position. The group alleged that he had abused his mandate by singling out Israel for condemnation. The group was particularly angry that Ziegler had officially asked Caterpillar Inc. to boycott Israel, because the company's tractors were being used to destroy Palestinian homes.
